THE 2005 ISCHIA ART AWARD GOES TO ENGLAND'S SANDY POWELL, COSTUME DESIGNER FOR 'THE AVIATOR'. AFTER DANTE FERRETTI' COMES ANOTHER STAR OF GLOBAL DESIGN

E-mail Print PDF
Ischia 5/3/2005 - Costume designers, set designers, and cinematographers: Ischia celebrates these arts with one of the hidden stars of Hollywood. Following the award for set designer Dante Ferretti at the 2004 edition, which preceded the awarding of the well deserved Oscar for 'The Aviator' another artist from the Oscars will be honored with the Ischia Arts Award. This time the honoree will be Oscar winner Sandy Powell, for such films as 'The Aviator' - for which she also won the Oscar in 2005 - and 'Gangs of New York' to name only the latest two.

The Ischia Art Award is given with the desire to bring notice to all of the behind the scenes stars of the cinema, honoring the creators of absolute masterworks that are capable of fascinating and stupefying the spectator. Costume designers, set designers, and cinematographers carry a central role in the visual translations of the ideas of the directors and the indications of the script writers.

Born in England, but brought up professionally by the great directors of Hollywood, Powell is currently working on two extraordinary projects: Brian De Palma's 'The Black Dahlia' and Martin Scorsese's next project, 'The Departed.' She has already finished her designs for Stephen Frears' upcoming film ' Mrs. Henderson Presents.

Ischia Global 2005, with Konchalovsky, Focuses on Russia. The Kimbo Club Comes to Life on the Croisette: Events, Parties, and Meetings in Anticipation of the Italian Film Fest

E-mail Print PDF
Dedicated to contemporary Russian cinema, with the participation of director Andrei Konchalovsky and the presence of Moscow's principal cinematic productions, the third edition of the Ischia Global Film and Music Fest (July 10-15) will be the one of the greatest Italian events of the summer, presented by the Ischia International Arts Academy and hosted by the historic Regina Isabella Hotel of Lacco Ameno.

In order to add to the anticipation of the rich summer programming for the festival, the Ischia International Arts Academy has chosen Cannes (May 11-22), with the Academy's presence on the Croisette shown with the 'Maison de Cannes Italia ' Kimbo Cinèma Club, a special area of welcome in the heart of the event, reserved for the artists, artisans, and journalists  both from Italy and elsewhere  of the 58th Festival du Cinema.

The 'Maison de Cannes, Italia' (www.cannesitalia.com) is realized in collaboration with the prestigious Cafè do Brasil, and will be situated in the seaside restaurant Le Rado-Plage, open to guests every day from nine in the morning until sunset. And on May 12 there will be the exclusive 'Ischia Wellness Party' a party on the beach among torch lights, oriental massages and calming music that will recreate the typical atmosphere of the island of wellness.

After the success of the first two editions that have reflected upon the cinematic industry of Bollywood and the cinema of the People's Republic of China, this year's Ischia Global Film and Music Fest shall be an original festival dedicated to Russian Cinema, from its masters to the latest discoveries, with Italian premieres of a selective sampling of the films of Moscow. Alongside this primary theme will be the traditional events of the program, which has placed it among the principal events of the global cinema industry through the participation of the protagonists of show business and international stars. Among the guests of Ischia Global 2005 will be director Andrei Konchalovsky, who will receive an award honoring his career, dedicated to the memory of Luchino Visconti, who frequented Ischia for extended periods in his extraordinary villa, La Colombaia.

Ischia, thanks to the dedication of the International Academy and the guests of the festival, is once again becoming, as it was during the time of the great producer Angelo Rizzoli, one of the preferred destinations of international stars. In the two previous edition awards have gone to Dennis Hopper, Shekhar Kapur, Val Kilmer, Peter Greenaway, Nancy Meyers, Stanley Tucci, Julie Taymor, F. Murray Abraham, Carlo Verdone, Dante Ferretti and Stefania Sandrelli. For music prizes have gone to Oscar Elliot Goldenthal, Andrea Bocelli, and the Blues Brothers.

The 2005 Program, which will be presented in July in Rome, will also include 'Symposiums on the Cinema' promoted by the Chamber of Commerce of Naples, as well as the third edition of the Isabella Rizzoli Prize, for the young talents of the European schools.

After 2003's first edition examined the film production of Bollywood, the Ischia Global Fest aims its spotlight this year at the Chinese market and its most interesting products, previewing five films that are brand new to Italy. These original films showcase the new Chinese popular cinema that is little seen outside China, but reveals much about the people, changes, humor and other characteristics of that fast-evolving immense country. The films are:

MY BITTERSWEET TAIWAN by Zheng Dongtian (China 2004, 90 minutes)

A LOVE OF BLUENESS by Huo Jianqi (China 2002, 96 minutes)

WHEN RUOMA WAS SEVENTEEN by Zhang Jiarui (China 2003, 89 minutes)

PRETTY BIG FEET by Yang Yazhou (China 2002,103 minutes)

GONE IS THE ONE WHO HELD ME DEAREST IN THE WORLD by Ma Xiaoying (China
2002, 95 minutes)

Among the hosts of the review will be actor Yang Zhigong, star of "When Ruoma was Seventeen".

The review has been accomplished in collaboration with Far East Film Festival of Udine, which held its seventh edition this spring. It is the only Italian festival dedicated to contemporary Asian film production, and shows each year the innovations of the cinema of the Far East.

The Far East Festival Film also has provided its Gallery To Far East Festival" to Villa Arbusto. The gallery includes 30 images from recent productions of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, The Philippines, Japan, Singapore and Thailand. These images further demonstrate the tastes and interests of the emerging Far East market.

The legendary Blues Brothers Band will receive the prestigious William Walton Award on the concluding evening of the 2nd Global Film & Music Fest at a presentation dedicated to the memory of Ray Charles, who died June 10, 2004. The band became famous in the 1980 John Landis cult film, The Blues Brothers, that starred John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. They also participated in a sequel, Blues Brothers 2000, and have toured the world bringing the blues to new audiences. The presentation on July 16 will be at the Regina Isabella Hotel.

Ray Charles had a role as himself in The Blues Brothers. Participating at the presentation will be American producer Martin Richards (Oscar winner for 'Chicago') and Francesco Sanavio, who for some 30 years traveled with Charles arranging his European tours. The Walton prize, presented last year to Andrea Bocelli, will be presented by Lady Susan Walton, widow of the great English musician who chose Ischia as their residence.

The Blues Brothers Band of 10 musicians includes four of its original members. They gained a triple platinum record for Briefcase Full of Blues. The band will be led at Global Fest by founder Steve The Colonel Cropper, one of the living legends of rock. Among the band members are Lou "Blue Lou" Marini (sax), Alan "Mr. Fabulous" Rubin (trumpet), "Smokin" John Tropea (guitar) Anthony "Rusty" Cloud (keyboards), Eric "The Red" Udel (bass), Clint "The Cannon" De Ganon (drums), Rob "Honeydripper" (voice and harmonica), and Eddie Knock on Wood Floyd, special vocal guest.
